Bill Thomas is also the inventor of Pile Saver, designed right here in Ocean Isle Beach as an answer to a problem every local dock owner knows: barnacles, marine growth, and shipworm working on pilings in the tidal zone. The collar rides the tide and scrubs the piling on every rise and fall. It earned a U.S. patent in 2013, and an independent North Carolina State University study found it highly effective at keeping barnacles off pier piles.
